ABIGAIL JOHNSON BIOGRAPHY

Abigail Pierrepont Johnson, born in December 1961, is the chairman and CEO of Fidelity Investments, one of the largest asset management firms globally, and also the chairman of its sister company, Fidelity International. As a member of the Johnson family, which founded Fidelity, she has been a pivotal figure in both its leadership and its growth over the years. Her grandfather, Edward C. Johnson II, founded the company in 1946, and her father, Edward C. “Ned” Johnson III, greatly expanded it. Abigail is part of a financial dynasty that spans three generations, and her leadership has been integral to the firm’s modernization and digital growth.

Abigail Johnson was born in Boston, Massachusetts, into a family deeply entrenched in finance. She attended Hobart and William Smith Colleges, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in art history. Her interest in finance was piqued through her exposure to the family business, and after graduating, she worked as a consultant at Booz Allen Hamilton. However, her trajectory into the family firm became more apparent when she pursued an MBA from Harvard Business School, graduating in 1988.

Johnson joined Fidelity in 1988 as an equity analyst, starting from the ground up despite her family’s legacy. Her early career was marked by an immersive experience in the company’s day-to-day operations. She worked in various roles, gaining a deep understanding of the firm’s inner workings, including as a portfolio manager, before transitioning into leadership positions.

In 2001, Abigail became the president of Fidelity Asset Management, where she was responsible for overseeing the firm’s core business of mutual fund management. Her success in this role helped pave the way for her ascension through the company’s ranks. In 2012, she was named president of Fidelity Financial Services, placing her in charge of all major divisions, including asset management, brokerage, and retirement services.

When her father, Ned Johnson, stepped down as CEO in 2014, Abigail Johnson took over the role, becoming one of the most powerful women in finance. Two years later, in 2016, she succeeded him as chairman. Her leadership has been marked by a continued emphasis on innovation, particularly in digital services and financial technology.

Under her guidance, Fidelity has embraced new technologies, offering digital financial services such as robo-advisory, cryptocurrency trading, and an improved user experience through mobile applications. These efforts have positioned Fidelity as a forward-thinking leader in the financial services industry. Fidelity’s vast offerings—ranging from mutual funds, investment management, and retirement services—serve millions of individual and institutional clients worldwide. With more than $11 trillion in assets under administration, Fidelity is one of the world’s largest financial services companies.

Abigail Johnson is known for her understated, private approach, contrasting with the more flamboyant style of some financial leaders. She rarely gives interviews or appears in public forums, preferring to focus on Fidelity’s strategic direction. Her leadership is marked by a commitment to employee culture, fostering innovation, and maintaining Fidelity’s reputation as a client-centric business.

Despite her quiet public persona, Johnson’s influence is felt strongly within the industry. She has consistently been ranked among the most powerful women in the world by Forbes and Fortune magazines. As of 2024, her net worth is estimated to be over $25 billion, according to Bloomberg Billionaires Index, making her one of the wealthiest women globally.

Abigail Johnson’s leadership has ensured that Fidelity remains a privately-owned, family-run business while expanding its reach and adapting to modern financial trends. Her work reflects both the weight of her family legacy and her vision for the future of financial services.
