BIOGRAPHY
Alexander Shchetynsky, born in 1960, is a distinguished Ukrainian composer renowned for his contributions to contemporary classical music. His extensive body of work encompasses a wide array of forms, including solo instrumental pieces, chamber music, orchestral compositions, choral works, and operas. Throughout his career, Shchetynsky’s compositions have been showcased across numerous European countries and North America, performed by esteemed ensembles such as the Moscow opera house Helikon-Opera, the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, the Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra, the children’s choir Maîtrise de Radio France, the Arditti String Quartet, the Moscow Contemporary Music Ensemble, Ensemble Wiener Collage, Ensemble Klangforum, Ensemble Continuum (New York), New Juilliard Ensemble, musikFabrik, and the Stockholm Saxophone Quartet. Notable artists, including pianist Yvar Mikhashoff, soprano Phyllis Bryn-Julson, and cellist Alexander Rudin, have also interpreted his works.
Shchetynsky’s educational journey began at the Kharkiv Art Institute, where he studied composition and music theory from 1978 to 1983. This foundational period was instrumental in shaping his musical perspective and honing his compositional skills. Over the years, he has developed a distinctive style that can be described as avant-garde, post-avant-garde, and post-modern. His approach is characterized by a combination of quasi-serial procedures and a keen attention to the allure of sound material, with melody serving as a primary source of expression.
