BIOGRAPHY

Dr. Chelsea Marie Berns is an evolutionary and ecological biologist whose research delves into the evolution of phenotypic diversity and sexual dimorphism. Her academic journey began at Colorado State University, where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Zoology with a minor in Music between 2000 and 2005. This interdisciplinary foundation laid the groundwork for her future endeavors in biological research and education.

Pursuing advanced studies, Dr. Berns attended Iowa State University from 2007 to 2013, obtaining her Ph.D. in Ecology, Evolution, and Organismal Biology. During her doctoral research, she focused on micro- and macroevolutionary patterns of sexual size and shape dimorphism in hummingbird bill morphology. Employing landmark-based geometric morphometrics, she quantified morphological differences across 270 species of hummingbirds, examining rates of phenotypic evolution and morphological disparity both within and between species. This work contributed to a deeper understanding of evolutionary processes shaping biodiversity.
