BIOGRAPHY
Chelsea Marie Berns is an evolutionary and ecological biologist with a profound interest in the evolution of phenotypic diversity and sexual dimorphism. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Zoology, with a minor in Music, from Colorado State University in 2005. She then pursued her Ph.D. in Ecology, Evolution, and Organismal Biology at Iowa State University, completing it in 2013.
During her doctoral studies, Dr. Berns focused her research on the micro- and macroevolutionary patterns of sexual size and shape dimorphism in hummingbird bill morphology. Utilizing landmark-based geometric morphometrics, she quantified morphological differences and examined rates of phenotypic evolution and morphological disparity among 270 species of hummingbirds. Her work contributed to a deeper understanding of the evolutionary processes shaping phenotypic diversity in avian species.
