David L. Sifry

David L. Sifry is an accomplished entrepreneur and executive with extensive experience in social media, artificial intelligence (AI), natural language processing (NLP), transportation, productivity systems, mobile applications, enterprise software, Linux services, wireless technologies, search technologies, and behavioral analytics. He earned his Bachelor of Science in Computer Science from The Johns Hopkins University in 1991, laying a strong foundation for his diverse and impactful career.

In August 2018, David founded Sifry Consulting, LLC, where he serves as Principal, providing product, design, and engineering consulting services to various businesses. From August 2019 to January 2022, he held the position of Vice President at the Anti-Defamation League’s Center for Technology and Society (CTS). During his tenure, he envisioned and developed the Online Hate Index (OHI), a set of machine learning-based classifiers designed to identify antisemitism and other forms of hate speech. This initiative achieved higher accuracy than existing classifiers, with Macro F1 scores exceeding 0.85 and real-world performance four to five times more accurate than those used by major social media platforms. Additionally, David led the creation of ADL’s Social Pattern Library, a research-driven collection of design patterns and principles aimed at mitigating online hate and harassment. His advocacy efforts with platforms like YouTube and Twitter resulted in significant reductions in hate and harassment across these services. He also collaborated with Zoom’s product team to implement the Security Shield icon for hosts, reducing incidents of “Zoombombing” and enhancing user experiences during the pandemic. In October 2021, David testified before the U.S. Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee on the role of social media platforms in amplifying domestic extremism and other harmful content. He also contributed to the authorship and advocacy of AB587, a social media platform transparency bill that has since become law in California.
