Dr. Dan Budenz

Throughout his career, Dr. Budenz has held multiple licenses across three states, including certifications as a Certified Professional Counselor (CPC), Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor III (CADC III), Supervisory CADC, Certified Biofeedback Therapist (CBT), Certified Forensic Therapist, and International Addictions Counselor. His hospital and specialty hospital-based mental health and addiction services have received state and Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) approvals, reflecting his commitment to maintaining high standards in patient care.

In the 1960s, Dr. Budenz demonstrated academic excellence as a member of the National Honor Society in high school and as the first-string center of his high school basketball team. He attended St. Vincent De Paul Seminary in Lemont and Morton West High School near Chicago. His athletic talents earned him a basketball scholarship to Northeastern Illinois University, where he graduated with honors.

The 1970s marked the beginning of Dr. Budenz’s professional journey in the field of addiction services. He managed Burger King restaurants in Des Plaines, Illinois, before completing a two-year certified clinical internship at Grant Hospital in Chicago. He furthered his education by completing graduate studies while establishing and coordinating addiction services at Hines Veterans Administration Hospital’s Psychiatry Building. He also developed inpatient and outpatient addiction services at Loretto Hospital in Chicago.

After a nationwide search, Madison General Hospital (now Meriter) appointed Dr. Budenz to direct and expand their addiction services. He completed his doctorate in psychology from Union University during this time. In the 1980s, he published works on relapse, affected family syndrome (co-dependency), and research on addiction services and mental health.
