BIOGRAPHY

Emily A. Brooks is a dedicated social work professional with a profound commitment to community organizing, education, and social justice. Her academic journey began at Longwood University in Farmville, Virginia, where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Psychology between August 2010 and May 2015. This foundational education equipped her with a deep understanding of human behavior and mental health, laying the groundwork for her future endeavors in social services.

Following her undergraduate studies, Emily joined the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) in Arlington, Virginia, as a HelpLine Intern in January 2015. In this role, she provided tailored information to callers by referencing local, state, and national resources, actively listened to individuals and their families, and shared her personal experiences with mental illness to foster empathy and support. Her dedication and skills led to her promotion as the HelpLine Coordinator from May 2015 to September 2016. In this capacity, Emily orchestrated HelpLine communications, trained volunteers, provided resources during calls, and served as a liaison between callers and local crisis services. She also moderated online discussion groups and collaborated with other departments to enhance conflict resolution strategies.

In pursuit of advanced knowledge and skills, Emily enrolled in the Master of Social Work program at the University of Denver’s Graduate School of Social Work in September 2018, focusing on Organizational Leadership and Policy Practice. Concurrently, she served as a Dual Resource Advocate Intern at The Gathering Place in Denver. In this role, Emily partnered with the Family Program and Community Access Team to explore solutions for unhoused families and individuals, scheduled appointments, provided referrals to local service agencies, distributed donated resources, and created supportive spaces for members. She also connected with other community organizations to understand existing networks serving people experiencing homelessness or poverty and participated in staff training sessions on topics such as de-escalation methods, gender sensitivity, and budgeting priorities in the nonprofit sector.

Emily’s professional development includes certifications in Adult/Pediatric CPR, AED, and Basic First Aid from Colorado CPR and First Aid LLC in January 2019. She also completed REVIVE! Training with the Fairfax-Falls Church Community Services Board in January 2018, where she learned protocols for addressing opioid overdose situations and administering naloxone. Additionally, in November 2016, she obtained Adult Basic Training Certification in Mental Health First Aid from the same board, studying appropriate responses to assist those in mental health crises and discussing action plans for de-escalation.

Throughout her career, Emily has demonstrated exceptional listening skills, giving full attention to those in need and building necessary rapport. She has developed a broad personal knowledge base, enabling her to understand a wide range of issues and devise versatile solutions. Emily embraces differing views with flexibility, understanding how cultural and personal contexts can influence ideas. Her professional goals and interests include community organizing and education, gathering narratives of experience for policy conversations, facilitating regional social justice movements, and strengthening existing local solutions for housing, employment, and health equity.
