BIOGRAPHY

Gerd Reiss is a seasoned software engineer with over two decades of experience in the industry. Since 2001, he has honed his expertise across the entire software development life cycle, specializing in Java, Kotlin, Scala, and various other JVM and non-JVM technologies. His proficiency encompasses both functional programming (FP) and object-oriented programming (OOP), with a focus on developing REST and gRPC APIs, microservices, and enterprise application integration (EAI) projects within cloud environments such as Google Cloud Platform (GCP), Amazon Web Services (AWS), and OpenShift. Gerd thrives in Agile SCRUM settings, consistently delivering high-quality software solutions.

In November 2022, Gerd joined Leonteq in Zurich, Switzerland, as a Fullstack Scala Developer. In this role, he designed and developed a full-stack Scala application for business process orchestration. The project utilized Scala 2 and Scala.js with Laminar and Tapir on the frontend, and Akka HTTP, Tapir, and Cats-Effect on the backend, all structured within a microservice architecture. Communication between services was facilitated through gRPC, and deployment was managed using Docker. Additionally, Gerd maintained, extended, and refactored existing gRPC and REST services, working with Oracle and PostgreSQL databases to ensure robust and efficient data management.

Prior to his tenure at Leonteq, from December 2020 to October 2022, Gerd served as a Senior Software Engineer at Sanitas Krankenversicherung in Zurich. Here, he played a pivotal role in a partner integration project, developing and enhancing messaging and microservice-based systems. His work involved utilizing Java 11, Spring Boot, REST, SOAP, Redis, Camunda, Kafka, PostgreSQL, Docker, Kubernetes, OpenShift, and GCP. He also conducted performance tests using Scala and Gatling and explored GraphQL through a proof of concept using Netflix DGS.

From January to September 2020, Gerd returned to Leonteq AG in Zurich as a Senior Software Engineer, contributing to a partner integration project. His responsibilities included developing and extending messaging and microservice-based systems using Scala, Java, Cats, Cats-Effect, Kittens, Shapeless, Akka-Streams, Alpakka, Google Protobuf, and Oracle DB. His efforts were instrumental in enhancing the scalability and performance of the company’s integration solutions.

Between June 2017 and April 2020, Gerd was a Senior Software Engineer at Finnova Bankware AG in Lenzburg, Switzerland. In this capacity, he led API and EAI development for various microservice and integration projects tailored to banking solutions. His work involved utilizing Scala 2.12 and 2.13 with Cats and Cats-Effect for functional programming, Scala.js for user interfaces, Akka HTTP, Apache Camel, OpenAPI/Swagger, Oracle DB with PL/SQL, AWS, and OpenShift. He also conceptualized and implemented multiple proofs of concept for cloud computing capabilities, employing technologies such as Java 8, Spring Boot with the Netflix Stack, Vert.x, Apache Camel, Akka HTTP, Gravitee, Keycloak, Docker, and Kubernetes/OpenShift. To enhance productivity, Gerd developed various IntelliJ plugins that generated boilerplate code and other data, significantly streamlining the development process.

Throughout his career, Gerd has demonstrated a commitment to continuous learning and professional development. He has obtained several certifications, including “Exploring GraphQL: A Query Language for APIs” from The Linux Foundation in 2022, “Developing Applications with Google Cloud Platform Specialization” from Google Cloud in 2020, and “Functional Programming in Haskell” from St. Petersburg Academic University in 2018. His multilingual abilities, encompassing English, German, Spanish, Russian, Bulgarian, and French, further enhance his capacity to collaborate effectively in diverse, international environments.
