Kurt Young is a seasoned basketball coach with over 20 years of experience in coaching and player development across various levels of the sport. Currently serving as the Director of Scouting & Player Development for the University of South Alabama’s Men’s Basketball team, Kurt has proven to be a valuable asset to the program. His efforts have directly contributed to the team’s success, including a 21-12 record for the 2021-2022 season, and notable victories such as the Las Vegas Classic Championship. His responsibilities encompass developing comprehensive scouting reports, collaborating on practice and game planning, recruiting student-athletes, and organizing basketball camps. Kurt’s leadership extends beyond tactical planning, as he fosters a culture of excellence both on and off the court.

Before his tenure at the University of South Alabama, Kurt served as the head basketball coach at several high schools, where he demonstrated exceptional coaching and leadership skills. At Douglass High School, he played a pivotal role in taking the team to a District Championship in only their third season. His strategic direction and player development led to a 21-12 record, with all six seniors moving on to college basketball. His success at Mercer County High School was equally impressive, where he guided the team to a Region Runner-Up finish and District Championship. These accomplishments highlighted his ability to turn struggling programs into competitive forces, and his leadership earned him multiple Coach of the Year honors.

Kurt’s early coaching career also included significant contributions at other institutions, including Northern Kentucky University and Hopewell High School. As an assistant coach at Northern Kentucky University, he helped recruit top players, including four out of the team’s top five scoring leaders, and contributed to a steady increase in wins each season. At Hopewell High School, Kurt led the team to the Virginia State Finals, where they finished as State Runner-Up in a dramatic overtime loss. This achievement marked the team’s first appearance in a state final since 1996. Throughout his career, Kurt’s emphasis on strong recruiting, team dynamics, and player development has resulted in consistently successful teams.

Kurt’s experience also extends to basketball camps, training, and consulting. In 2014, he founded KY Elite, a company dedicated to developing basketball players through individual, group, and team settings. The company also focuses on leadership mentoring, athletic consulting, and speaking engagements. Through KY Elite, Kurt has provided essential services to athletes and coaches, helping to improve their skills both on the court and in their personal lives. His entrepreneurial spirit and passion for mentoring have made KY Elite a respected entity in the basketball community.

In addition to his coaching and business endeavors, Kurt has an extensive background in recruiting and compliance, having served in various capacities at institutions like Arkansas Tech University and Hawaii Pacific University.
