Leonid Romanov

Prior to his role at Arris, Leonid was a Staff Software Engineer at Motorola Mobility, LLC in St. Petersburg, Russia, from December 2006 to November 2014. As a member of the Chief Technology Officer (CTO) team, he worked on next-generation GUIs for TV set-top boxes using 3D web technologies such as WebGL, the Three.js library, and GLSL, as well as HTML/CSS, HTML5 Canvas, and QML. He developed and implemented performance measurements and optimizations, created 3D models in Blender for emulated UIs, and automated content acquisition using Google APIs, YouTube APIs, and web page parsing for demos presented to prospective customers. In his capacity as a Motorola Customer Premises Equipment (CPE) Business engineer, Leonid was responsible for the design, development, and support of real-time software for cable TV set-top boxes in an embedded Linux environment, focusing primarily on graphics and video subsystems. His work included hardware abstraction layer implementation, platform porting, low-level graphics, closed captions and subtitles rendering, MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 user data extraction and processing, 3DTV support, and unit test implementation. Among his achievements were analyzing and improving graphics performance to achieve smooth animations for modern applications, porting and deploying Opera and Ekioh browsers on set-top box platforms to run new web-based UIs, and managing an intern project related to log analysis.

Leonid’s early career includes experience as an Engineer at the Scientific Research Institute of Television in St. Petersburg, Russia, from September 2005 to December 2006, where he programmed Atmel 8051 family microcontrollers for electronic TV signal commutators using assembly language and worked on a mobile TV station manual. From June 2003 to July 2005, he served as a Technician at Radiotelecom Enterprise in St. Petersburg, responsible for soldering, assembly, and testing of telemetry equipment.

In terms of education, Leonid earned an Engineer degree in Audiovisual Technology from St. Petersburg State University of Telecommunications between 2001 and 2006. This qualification is equivalent to a bachelor’s and master’s degree in electrical engineering from a U.S. college or university. He has also completed various courses and certifications, including Android Mobile Application Development, Developing iOS Apps with Swift 2, Unix safety, Linux Administration and Security fundamentals, Linux Device Drivers Development, Objective-C 2.0 for MAC OS X/iOS, Attack and Defense sites according to OWASP Top 10, Data Analysis with SQL, and Qt 5 from the Computer Training Center “Specialist” at Bauman Moscow State Technical University during 2015-2016. Additionally, he studied Computer Graphics (OpenGL) and Basics of Adobe Dreamweaver Website Design at St. Petersburg Polytechnical University in 2013, as well as C Programming and Object-Oriented Programming using C++ at the same institution in 2006.
