BIOGRAPHY

Maurice Levin is a renowned rare plant grower and preservationist, with a deep passion for conserving endangered plant species. He is the founder of Jurassic Garden, a family-owned nursery based in Los Angeles, California, specializing in the cultivation and sale of cycads, rare living-fossil plants, and other drought-tolerant species such as agaves, aloes, and strelitzias. For nearly 25 years, Maurice has been at the forefront of efforts to preserve these unique plants through propagation, working toward the mission of “Preservation through Propagation.” His work has helped ensure that these rare plants, once threatened in the wild, are protected and sustainably cultivated for future generations.

Maurice’s journey into the world of rare plant cultivation began after a successful career in investment banking, retained executive search, and commercial real estate. Prior to establishing Jurassic Garden, Maurice worked in corporate finance at Lehman Brothers, where he was involved in public offerings and merger/acquisition transactions in the investment banking sector. He also held a position at Bank of America in corporate banking, which provided him with a strong foundation in business and financial management. Despite his success in finance, Maurice found his true passion in horticulture, which led him to pivot and dedicate his career to the conservation and propagation of endangered plant species.

Maurice’s academic background reflects his versatile interests, starting with a Bachelor of Arts in History from Harvard University in 1979, followed by an MBA from the Harvard Graduate School of Business Administration in 1984. During his time at Harvard, he focused on finance and marketing, laying the groundwork for his future business endeavors. Later, he pursued coursework in horticulture and gardening at UCLA, further deepening his knowledge of plant cultivation and environmental preservation. His education, combined with his diverse professional experience, has allowed Maurice to merge business acumen with a deep commitment to the preservation of rare and endangered plants.

At Jurassic Garden, Maurice has led the charge in educating the public about the importance of conserving cycads, which are often referred to as “living fossils” due to their existence on Earth for over 200 million years. These ancient plants are now endangered due to habitat destruction and the illegal plant trade. Maurice’s dedication to educating others about the significance of these plants has made him a prominent figure in the plant conservation community. As an active member of the Cycad Society, Maurice has served on the Board of Directors and was the past Treasurer of the organization. His involvement has helped raise awareness about the need for conservation and the role that enthusiasts and businesses can play in protecting these unique species.

Outside of his professional work, Maurice enjoys spending time with his wife and two children, as well as engaging in his hobbies of gardening and watching college basketball. He is also a committed supporter of his alma mater, Harvard University.
