BIOGRAPHY

Michael Nelson is a business strategist and management consultant with over 30 years of experience in entrepreneurship, service, and consulting. Based in Woodbridge, Virginia, Michael specializes in providing small and growing businesses with the strategy, finance, planning, and communication support they need to scale. His services are designed for businesses that aren’t yet large enough to hire dedicated personnel for these roles but require expert help to bridge the gap. Through his a la carte services, he assists businesses by offering critical expertise in areas such as business models, financial reports, operational planning, and marketing. Michael’s unique approach to business strategy has made him a trusted advisor to companies at pivotal stages in their development.

Throughout his career, Michael has worked with various organizations in both the private and public sectors. He served as a staff officer at the Commandant of the Marine Corps, where he was responsible for managing worldwide operations planning to support top military and government officials. This experience provided him with a solid foundation in high-level strategic planning and operations management. Later, he worked at the Executive Office of the President of the United States, where he provided strategy consulting and developed methodologies to support national efforts, including Hurricane Katrina aid. His time in these government roles helped him gain a unique perspective on organizational dynamics, leadership, and the ability to work in high-pressure environments.

In the private sector, Michael has played key roles in founding and running startups. He has been involved in five startups, with current earnings ranging from $4 to $15 million annually. His entrepreneurial journey has given him hands-on experience in growing businesses, from the early stages to achieving traction and profitability. Michael finds immense satisfaction in helping small businesses grow by making decisions that have immediate impacts. In addition to his work as a consultant, Michael has extensive experience in operations management. As Operations Director at Professional Jet Management, he planned and executed worldwide executive transportation missions, coordinated supply chain and purchasing activities, and established policies and procedures for training and operations. His leadership and operational expertise in this role demonstrated his ability to manage complex logistics and ensure the smooth functioning of large-scale projects. Michael’s commitment to continuous improvement and his strategic mindset have enabled him to help businesses streamline their operations, improve efficiency, and enhance overall performance.

Michael holds an MBA from Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business, where he refined his business and strategic thinking. He also earned a BA from St. Olaf College with a concentration in History, a discipline that fostered his analytical skills and understanding of organizational and societal dynamics. Outside of his professional work, Michael is an avid photographer and enjoys activities such as woodworking, hiking, and soccer. He loves traveling internationally with his wife and three boys, where he finds inspiration and relaxation.
