Nicholas Fahrenkopf

As a graduate student, Nicholas continued to exhibit his leadership and service-oriented mindset. He served as President of the UAlbany Circle, where he implemented important organizational changes, including instituting term limits. His time as president was marked by successful events, including hosting a Regional Leadership Conference and an ODK National Signature Event featuring a leadership lecture by former NYSE President William Johnston. In addition to his leadership roles within the university, Nicholas contributed to the broader campus community by serving on various committees, such as the President’s Budget Advisory Group, the Strategic Planning Committee, and the Alumni Association’s Graduates of the Last Decade Committee.

In addition to his academic and leadership achievements, Nicholas is deeply committed to community service. He volunteers regularly with the Ronald McDonald House and is an active member of the Albany Curling Club, where he serves as chair of the Capital Campaign Committee. His dedication to science education and outreach is evident in his work with K-12 students, as well as mentoring undergraduate students in the lab. Nicholas’ contributions to education were recognized in 2011 when he was awarded the Wendell Williams Memorial Nanotechnology Fellowship for Excellence in Teaching and Mentoring.

Nicholas’ research is focused on fabricating nanoscale and microscale devices for biological applications, with a particular emphasis on using semiconductor technology to create sensors capable of detecting DNA. His work has the potential to revolutionize diagnostics and improve our understanding of cellular processes, particularly in cancer research. He has been involved in various research projects within the College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering, where he has designed and fabricated devices for collaborations both within the university and beyond.
