BIOGRAPHY

Patricia Botts is an accomplished artist, designer, and educator based in Shelby, North Carolina. Her academic journey began at Winthrop University, where she earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Interior Design in 2003. This foundational education equipped her with a diverse skill set, including proficiency in both hand rendering and computer-aided drafting. These competencies were further honed through her work with architectural firms in Charlotte’s banking sector, where she contributed to projects for prominent institutions such as Bank of America, First Union, Wachovia, BB&T, and TIAA-CREF. Her experience in this structured, project-driven environment laid the groundwork for her pursuit of precision and quality in both design and fine arts.

Following the birth of her three children, Patricia sought a career that would allow her to balance professional aspirations with family life. Her involvement in her children’s preschool art activities inspired her to transition into art education. In 2011, she obtained a Master of Arts in Teaching (Art K-12) from Winthrop University. She subsequently taught art at various institutions, including her alma mater, Fallston Elementary, as well as East Gaston High School and Thomas Jefferson Classical Academy Middle School. At Thomas Jefferson, Patricia developed a cross-curricular arts program that connected artists, artworks, and historical movements to contemporary events, a model that has since been adopted within the charter school system.

With her children grown, Patricia embarked on further academic advancement, earning a Master of Fine Arts in Studio Art from Winthrop University in 2022. This program challenged her to explore new methodologies, emphasizing discovery in both imagery and concept development. Her work evolved to become more emotionally driven and intuitive, reflecting her belief that contemporary art offers opportunities for meaningful and purposeful conversations.

Throughout her career, Patricia has maintained a core design principle focused on the intentional planning of tranquil spaces with a tactile, organic flow. Her teaching philosophy emphasizes resourcefulness and imagination, aiming to cultivate cross-curricular connections between core knowledge and classroom art. She has led students in exploring integrative links between art and subjects such as math, science, music, social studies, and multicultural awareness. Her dedication to fostering critical thinking and problem-solving skills has been a hallmark of her educational approach.

In addition to her teaching endeavors, Patricia has an extensive creative practice portfolio that spans interdisciplinary and emerging practices. Her achievements range from interior design projects to gallery installations of both visual and conceptual art. Notably, she spearheaded the design concepts and implementation of the “MyWork” program for Bank of America, optimizing flexible workspaces to retain quality employees. This initiative began in Charlotte and expanded to other major cities, reflecting her impact on corporate design.

Patricia’s work has been recognized through various publications and gallery exhibits. Her residential designs have been featured in national magazines, and she has actively participated in community art programs, particularly through Central United Methodist Church in Shelby. Her recent thesis research investigates the ways we respond to line as a metaphor through liminal space, contributing to contemporary discussions in fine arts.
