BIOGRAPHY

Pedro Afonso is a distinguished software engineer and technology leader with extensive experience in frontend development and engineering management. Currently serving as the Vice President of Engineering and Frontend Tech Lead at Engine AI since November 2019, Pedro has been instrumental in architecting and leading the implementation of a dynamic data visualization platform. His leadership has been pivotal in scaling the engineering team from a single member to over 20 professionals, providing strategic direction in platform architecture and frontend development. Under his guidance, the team developed a comprehensive Data Visualization Platform utilizing a modern tech stack, including Node.js, GraphQL, React.js, Material UI, and Highcharts. Pedro also pioneered the establishment of the UI/UX team, aligning design initiatives with frontend technology strategies to enhance user experience and interface consistency. He instituted formal HR processes, including regular performance check-ins and reviews, integrating both qualitative and quantitative metrics to drive continuous improvement. His efforts resulted in an exceptionally low churn rate across direct reporting teams, reflecting a strong focus on retention and team satisfaction. Prior to his tenure at Engine AI, Pedro served as the Frontend Tech Lead at Vocalink, a Mastercard company, from September 2018 to November 2019. In this role, he architected and built the user interface for a major greenfield project. His responsibilities included implementing a reusable component library using React and Storybook, developing applications with Material-UI-based components, and promoting project standards for JavaScript development. Pedro enhanced continuous deployment and integration pipelines and contributed to user experience discussions with a technical and pragmatic perspective. His work ensured the delivery of a robust and user-friendly interface, aligning with the project’s objectives and user needs.

In 2018, Pedro took on the role of Frontend Architect and Lead Developer at OmniaCasino.com, an early-stage and fast-paced online casino startup. He led the frontend team, coaching the Java backend team on GraphQL adoption, schema definition, and validation. Pedro advocated for effective and functional React.js patterns, supported recruitment and interviewing processes, and provided advice on effort versus business value. He recommended approaches for UI/UX, taking into account time to market, thereby significantly increasing product features’ momentum and contributing to the startup’s growth.

From April 2017 to July 2018, Pedro was the Frontend Architect and Lead Developer at Lightbox.co.nz, where he built and launched the platform from the ground up across multiple platforms, including web, iOS, Android, and TV, using the Brightcove Video Cloud platform. He was the main contributor responsible for the architecture and implementation of Lightbox 2.0, a single-page application offering a fully user-driven experience customizable through a content management system. Pedro mentored developers new to React, established productive development processes and guidelines, and led the frontend team, which grew from two to six developers. He advised project management with insights on effort and risk, supported recruitment and interviewing processes, and maintained team motivation and momentum throughout the 1.5-year greenfield project. Pedro also established a continuous integration environment for automated build and deployment processes in AWS S3, ensuring efficient and reliable deployments.

Pedro’s technical proficiency encompasses a robust stack, including over 8.5 years of experience with React, 7 years with Redux, 6.5 years with Apollo GraphQL, and a decade with Node.js and TypeScript. He is also familiar with Python, Docker, GitHub, Azure, AWS, OpenAI, ArgoCD, and Delta Lake, actively working with these technologies in his current role to varying degrees. His toolset includes Git, Slack, Jira, Confluence, Figma, FigJam, ChatGPT, and Claude, reflecting his adaptability and commitment to leveraging modern tools for effective project management and collaboration.
