Richard Hopkins

Throughout his tenure at IBM, Richard held various pivotal positions. As the Chief Technology Officer (CTO) for Civil and Local Government from March 2010 to May 2011, he aligned IBM UK’s Systems Integration capabilities with public sector needs. Between September 1990 and May 2010, as an Executive IT Architect, he designed and implemented complex IT systems, including online account services for a major credit card issuer, a National Identity Card biometric system, and various UK Government systems. Earlier in his career, from February 1999 to July 2000, he served as a Solutions Assurer at IBM Global Services, providing independent commercial and technical assurance for IBM’s largest Systems Integration and Services Outsourcing projects and proposals. He began his journey at IBM as a Systems Engineer from September 1990 to February 1992, offering UNIX and PC support to clients in the North East of England.

Richard’s academic background includes a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Durham, obtained between 1987 and 1990. His passion for technology and innovation is further exemplified by his co-authorship of “Eating the IT Elephant,” a book that elucidates strategies for delivering systems into complex brownfield IT landscapes.

Beyond his professional endeavors, Richard is a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering and has delivered presentations at conferences worldwide on topics such as quantum computing, artificial intelligence and machine learning, biometrics, and brownfield engineering. His personal interests include an appreciation for the works of J.M.W. Turner, Morgan motor cars, and Japanese gardens. In his leisure time, he enjoys building real-life robots inspired by Doctor Who, reflecting his blend of technical expertise and creative enthusiasm.
